Culloden Battlefield Visitor Centre

January 31st 2008

Pasquill Roof Trusses, a Saint-Gobain company has today announced it has supplied an engineered timber roofing to The National Trust for Scotland’s new visitor centre at Culloden Battlefield.  The Centre’s unique design houses an innovative new battlefield exhibition and additional visitor facilities and its roof has been constructed with Pasquill’s engineered timber I-beams.

The National Trust for Scotland wanted to ensure a seamless link between the building and its environment and felt it was imperative to use materials in the build that were environmentally friendly.  The visitor centre was relocated to become part of the Culloden Battlefield Memorial Project when The National Trust for Scotland , after some extensive research, discovered that the original centre was sited on the third Government line.  The existing building has been demolished and the new visitor centre is now sited further to the south, away from the battlefield.

Pasquill’s engineered timber I-beams were used as they provided sustainable solution for the roof, are also light and easy to fix and can be installed without the use of heavy lifting equipment.  The I-beams have been engineered to provide enhanced structural performance and the timber used within the Pasquill Roof Trusses factory is PEFC and FSC certified Chain of Custody and therefore meets stringent sustainability requirements.

Architect’s firm Gareth Hoskins Associates designed the building, and information about the site can be found at www.garethhoskinsarchitects.co.uk as well as at The National Trust for Scotland ’s site at www.nts.org.uk/culloden

The Visitor Centre was built by established building firm Morrison Construction and the use of Pasquill’s engineered timber I-beams have helped achieve an aesthetically pleasing design to this public building. Donald McLachlan, Operatons Director of Morrison Construction said, “Pasquill offer us an excellent service and provide the best quality materials available, we are delighted to have worked with them on this project.”

Brian Kille, Pasquill’s Sales Director said, “As experts in the supply of engineered timber solutions, we are delighted that the Culloden Centre has integrated our roof beams into their prestigious project – the use of these beams has ensured a roof structure that is not only robust and has significant sustainable benefits, but also helps to ensure a time and waste efficient build.”
